Let's talk about Disney for a moment. Things we have: 1. princesses.
2. conventional concepts of beauty.
3. patriarchal societies.
4. adventures. magic. cartoony kisses.
But mostly I'd say you have women(girls? eh.) "dealing with" the constraints of whatever situation they're placed with; using whatever charms/wits/cleavage(or if you're Ariel, legs.) available to "make it happen".
What I find most appealing in all of these characters is the feistiness they tend to exhibit at least once or twice during their adventures. Kick ass, take names, be graceful in heels.
Compile those elements with some pretty kickin' songs, and you've got yourself a good time.
